The Truth About Blogging

4/10/2017

This time I decided to share with you the dark side of blogging. Back in 2012 when I started my blog no one, and I truly mean no one told me the ugly side of blogging. When I first decided to have my own blog I had no idea of what I was going to write about, I didn't even know the basics, what the heck is a niche anyway? SEO? Do you mean CEO?
Before I get started I want to point out that every single blogger has a different path and different versions, but I truly wanted to share mine. If you're thinking about becoming a blogger I recommend you to read this and ask yourself if you truly want it (to actually think about a blog as a business more than a hobby) and if you're already a blogger I believe you'll either agree with me or at least learn my side of blogging. Anyhoo, so let's get done with the dark side.

1. You're going to get demotivated
Over and over again. Yes, that's a truth. You are going to start so motivated and you'll think you'll hit the jackpot in a couple months and get that viral traffic with one post and exponentially grow like some other blogger did. But let me just tell you this: no, it's not that easy for everyone. I like to call them the outliers as Malcolm Gladwell calls those that have a story of success. I don't think they get lucky, I think they have awesome content or they have content that truly creates an impact. But the truth is you'll get truly demotivated if you start comparing someone else's growth to yours. And let me tell you that I've missed account of all those times that I got demotivated because I compared myself to other bloggers, once I even quit my blog for almost a year.

Tip: The best way to avoid getting demotivated is NOT COMPARING YOURSELF to others and if you truly can't help it, stop visiting other blogs for a while. Concentrate on creating awesome content, giving the best of you and when you get confident enough go ahead and continue reading other blogs.

2. Only a small amount cares and will actually read your posts
The first time I quitted my blog was because I was so mad that I spoke my heart out and only 1 out of 5 people actually read what I have to say. Let's be honest, statistics say that most blog readers will only skim your content. Once I read a post of a blogger whose dog passed away, the post was a beautiful letter to his dog and most comments were supporting him, but then I came up with a couple of comments that said: "Great post!", "Seems like you had a great day!" and of course they left their blog and ask him to check it out.

Tip: It's totally okay that not everyone will read your post. As Video Influencers say: You have to become a fan to get fansBe honest with your comments, talk from the heart and trust me, that way you'll attract your most loyal readers.

3. Slow growth, really slow
Blogging is not as easy as it looks like. This, coming from an average full-time blogger. It takes time, and you're going to be in your computer for hours and after a long day you'll realize that all that effort was just to get a couple of comments on your latest post and you'll be disappointed. It truly takes a lot of time and effort to get noticed, but it's worth it. Soon enough you'll receive a PR's offer and you'll be amazed that all your hard work is actually finally paying off.

Tip: If you keep working hard enough and you can't see any growth after a long time then maybe it's time to question what you're doing, as I read from Living Well Spending Less: work smarter, not harder. You have to truly learn how to work smarter and that'll work far more than spending hours and hours doing the same thing.

4. You're going to fail and have to stand up after it
I've failed more than once with some strategies and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I've stood up more times than I've fallen and that's being a blogger. Last time it took me a whole week to design a whole new strategy that I thought it was going to work out so well for my blog, but the truth is it didn't. Here's what you need to know that no one will tell you: NOT EVERY STRATEGY IS GOING TO WORK OUT FOR YOU. There, I said it. Most of the articles you read on how to grow your blog, how to make your traffic viral, or whatever you find is not going to work out for you. Why? Because you take those tips and you have to adapt it to your blog, niche and goal. What worked for someone is not going to work out for you, you have a different story.

Tip: If you're truly decided that this is your passion you'll go through failures until you hit the jackpot. Blogging is a job that works through trial and error, it takes time, but you'll learn a lot from it and that's what will make you improve as a blogger.

I've quit my blog more than once and I've had an amazing comeback every single time. I've learned a lot, I love my blog, it's my passion, I was born for this truly. I may not be the best doing it, but I believe that when you're truly passionate about something, you have to chase it, improve and challenge yourself to be better at it until you're AWESOME at it. This post is not meant to demotivate you at all, there's so much more to love about blogging and it's only meant for those who want to blog not because they want to make money, but because they're passionate about it.

Challenge question!
Let's get real, do you have any truths to share?

  7. I feel you, there are so many issues I have to deal every day. Slow growth is my #1 concern, there are so many blogs out there you have to make an extra effort to be found, we are just a small fish in the sea and it takes a lot of work. Also, there are so many people that do not read my posts and just leave a comment for the sake of just leaving a comment. I remember once I did a negative review on a product and someone commented ''this looks like an awesome product''... ok... Great post!! xx
