You Need More Sleep | 5 Tips to Sleep Better To Be More Productive During the Day

3/09/2017

About six months ago I started seeing a psychiatrist, the first thing he told me was "you need more sleep", and I just looked at my mom like 'told you!'. At the beginning I didn't understand this that much, because I wasn't sure how sleeping was going to get me any better. Let's be honest, I've always been fickle, my behavior has ups and downs all day long, but not as usual people do, I also suffer from anxiety and it's a pain in the ass. Sometimes I just want to have a good time and my own behavior doesn't let me, or even my mind. Although I got this tip for my problem it does help everyone in life so I truly wanted to share this with you bunnies!

At that time I never had a good sleep because I was used to sleep with my curtains open, so my room was never dark at all, I first started to do this because I loved to wake up with sunlight, it made me feel good each morning, but never really felt rested at all. I also left my door open because I have three cats and each of them used to wake me up to ask for food, even if it was 2am I would wake up to feed my cat and even pet him if they asked me to at that hour. Oh and I haven't even mentioned my phone, I used to see Instagram and Twitter all night long until I finally fell asleep and slept with my phone with sound and vibration under my pillow.

Okay, so you see what's wrong? Be honest, does anyone do this? Anyhow, let's get started with the tips!

Okay, ¿entonces ya ven qué estaba mal? Sean honestas, alguna de ustedes hace esto? Bueno, ¡ahora empecemos con los tips!

Drink tea before going to bed
A good tea for sleeping is lemon balm tea, it's the one that everyone recommends if you want to get a good sleep. I've always found it quite relaxing to have a warm cup of tea before going to bed to be honest, this is one of the things I enjoy the most, it makes me so happy and I go so comfortable to bed.

Have a reading instead
This one is so important, I've noticed a huge difference on my sleep when I stop using my phone at least an hour before going to bed and just go to bed and have a reading for at least an hour until I feel sleepy. It distracts you from your day and if you combine it with that warm cup of tea is amazing. Sometimes I'm just so ready to go to bed to have this warm feeling away from the day, away from distractions. Just a 'me' time.

Make sure your room is dark enough
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that used to sleep with the curtains open, but trust me, a darker room gives you a deeper sleep. The only thing I regretted was keeping my door shut, I truly missed my cats at night, but they were too spoiled!!

Turn on a candle or incense
I'm more of an incense girl, I don't know about you. Right now I have rose incense and it smells wonderful, it always make me feel so calm and I'm not lying, but each time I turn one on I feel like it's a new beginning. Although, candles are the new fashion, I'm keeping my incenses, but it's your choice, whichever makes you happier and calmer.

Stick to a schedule
I have to confess I haven't been able to do this since I moved to Mexico City. I used to go to bed at 10pm every single day, but since I came here my sleep has been a mess, I usually go to sleep at 1:30 am, 3 am, once I even went to bed until 5 am, it's terrible. But when I used to go to bed every single day at 10 pm I got the best sleep of my life!

Light dinner
I'm one of those girls that love, wait LOVE, to have a burger for dinner or something really really fat. I just love eating and it helps with anxiety, by the end of the day I want to eat anything that crosses my path. But to be honest it's better to have some light dinner, like tea and cheese and just go to bed like that, it makes you feel more comfortable through the night and it helps you sleep faster, or at least on my experience.

  2. It really depends on what type of tea too, green tea has very little caffeine but ordinary tea usually will keep me up at night if I take it in the evenings. I know camomile tea is amazing because it has a calming effect so it's actually recommended. I have been a chronic insomniac for more than a decade so I did lots of research in how to manage my sleeping problems. :-(

    1. I agree, it totally depends on which tea we're talking about. I drink one that's from Remedy 24, not sure if it's Mexican to be honest, but they have one special to relax you and I love it, there's one especially to help you sleep, but I haven't tried it. It would help you out a lot if you talk with this with your doctor, he can help you out with your insomnia :)

  3. Ha, I just had the discussion with my husband who loves to sleep with the curtains wide open. I need darkness to be fully rested, a constant struggle. And keeping a schedule is really important as well.
